RFK Racing Names Ryan Preece Driver of the Number 6 Ford Mustang Beginning in 2027
Preece to carry the organization’s original number, building upon a legacy that began with Mark Martin in 1988
CONCORD, NC, Nov. 04, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- One of Roush Fenway Keselowski (RFK) Racing’s most iconic numbers is entering a new chapter. Ryan Preece will take the wheel of the organization's famed number 6 Ford Mustang Dark Horse beginning with the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season. Preece succeeds Brad Keselowski in the famed entry and carries forward a legacy that has been at the heart of the organization for nearly four decades.
Few numbers are as closely tied to a single organization as the number 6 is to RFK Racing. When Jack Roush entered NASCAR's premier series in 1988, it was Mark Martin, behind the wheel of the team’s first entry. Together, they built one of the sport's most successful partnerships and turned the number 6 into one of NASCAR's most recognizable cars. Nearly four decades later, RFK Racing has chosen Preece to carry that legacy forward.
Preece, who has driven RFK Racing's number 60 for the past two seasons, will move to the organization’s flagship entry beginning with the 2027 NASCAR season. He will become the latest driver entrusted with the number, following 2012 Cup Series Champion Keselowski, who has driven the car since 2022.
"To be trusted with the 6 means more to me than I can put into words," said Preece, who will coincidentally become just the sixth full-time driver to drive the 6 for RFK Racing. "When you think about what this number means to RFK Racing, you think about Jack Roush, Mark Martin and everything they built together. To know this team believes I'm the right person to carry that number into the future is incredibly humbling."
The opportunity for Preece represents a milestone in a career defined by perseverance. The Berlin, CT native, who made a name for himself in the Northeast Modified ranks, earned a reputation as hard core racer, whose relentless determination helped fulfill his NASCAR dreams. Seemingly appropriate, he drove a car, with the number 6 during much of his Modified career.
“I drove that number for Ed Partridge, who was more than just a car owner to me. He was one of my best friends and someone who believed in me and helped fund me an opportunity that changed my life. We didn’t know it at the time, but we won our final Whelen Modified Tour race together Richmond 2021,” said Preece. “So, when I say the number 6 feels like home, it’s because it represents more than racing. It represents the people who believed in me, the relationships I’ve built, and the memories that got me here. To have the opportunity to carry that number into the next chapter of my career means more than I can put into words.”
The number 6 has been a cornerstone of RFK Racing since its inception. During Martin's celebrated tenure (1988-2006) with the team. Martin earned 35 Cup Series victories in the car, establishing the 6 car as one of NASCAR's most recognizable entries.
"I like Ryan Preece because he's a racer, plain and simple," said Martin. "He came up the hard way, and he's had to fight for everything he's gotten. That's something I respect. When he gets in a race car, he gives you everything he's got, and he's not going to be satisfied just riding around. That number means a lot to me, and I think Ryan is a great fit to carry it forward."
Since joining RFK Racing in 2025, Preece has continued to showcase his talent, highlighted by victories in the 2026 Cook Out Clash and his first career Cup Series points-paying win at Daytona International Speedway this past August, which secured his place in the NASCAR Chase.
"Ryan Preece is a true racer making him the perfect fit for the number 6," said Chip Bowers, president of RFK Racing. "The 6 car is symbolic in our organization and has contributed to some incredible memories in the Cup Series. Ryan is not just enthusiastic about the opportunity, but more importantly he's embracing the expectations that come with taking the wheel of an iconic car. More great history is sure to be made with Ryan at the helm."
Preece's transition to the number 6 will include his current team and personnel, led by crew chief Derrick Finley. The team will compete as a chartered entry for the full 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season. Additional details regarding the future of RFK Racing's No. 60 entry will be announced at a later date.
