Finland files charges against oil tanker team for vandalism
(MENAFN) Finland’s deputy prosecutor general has filed charges against the captain and two officers of the oil tanker Eagle S for aggravated vandalism and aggravated interference with telecommunications, following damage to undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland, according to the National Prosecution Authority.
The vessel, registered in the Cook Islands, reportedly dragged its anchor for approximately 90 kilometers in December 2024, causing harm to five cables. Among the damaged infrastructure was the EstLink 2 power connection between Finland and Estonia, a vital link within the Baltic and Nordic energy networks, along with four telecommunications cables, investigators stated.
The prosecution authority emphasized that the breakage of these ultra-high-capacity transmission and telecom cables posed a significant risk to Finland’s energy supply and communication systems.
Estimated repair expenses are around 60 million euros (approximately 69.66 million U.S. dollars), the authority added.
